Troubleshooting

Most cutting problems come from four places: a dull or dirty blade, a mat that has lost its grip, the wrong pressure or depth, and a connection or software issue.

If the cut does not go through, check the blade first: remove it, clear any vinyl or paper fibers from the tip and look for a chipped point. Then check the material setting, and only then raise the pressure. If the material tears or drags, the blade is often dull or the pressure is too high for thin paper.

If material shifts or bubbles, the mat has usually lost its tack or the material is not pressed flat. Clean the mat as the maker describes, or replace it, and use a brayer or scraper to smooth the material down.

If the machine will not connect, try a USB cable first, restart the machine and the computer, and update both the software and the firmware. Bluetooth trouble is often another device holding the pairing.

Common mistakes

  • Raising pressure before checking the blade and the mat.
  • Cleaning a mat with something the maker warns against, which removes the adhesive.
  • Running several connection fixes at once and not knowing which one worked.
