Setup and software

A new cutter needs a computer or phone, the maker's software, an account and a first test cut. Most setup trouble is a cable, a Bluetooth pairing or a firmware update that did not finish.

Install the maker's software before you plug the machine in: Design Space for Cricut, Silhouette Studio for Silhouette, or the program that ships with a vinyl plotter. Run the setup steps it offers, including firmware updates, and let them finish with the machine on and connected.

Connect by USB for the first session if you can. Once the machine cuts, pair it over Bluetooth or WiFi. If a cut lands in the wrong place on a print then cut job, run the machine's calibration from the software menu.

Finish setup with a small test cut on scrap. It tells you the blade, the mat and the preset work together before you cut a full sheet.

Ready when: The machine shows as connected in the software, the firmware is current and a test shape cuts cleanly and weeds easily.

Common mistakes

  • Unplugging the machine during a firmware update.
  • Pairing over Bluetooth before a single USB cut has worked.
  • Skipping calibration and then blaming print then cut misalignment on the printer.
