# Silhouette Cameo not cutting or cutting badly

**Short answer:** When a Silhouette Cameo goes through the motions without cutting, the design usually has no cut lines turned on in the Send panel, or the wrong tool is assigned. When it cuts only partly, check the blade first: clean or replace it, confirm the depth, and make sure the material setting matches. Then check the mat's grip, the roller positions and run a test cut before cutting the full design.

A Cameo that moves but leaves the vinyl untouched, cuts some lines but not others, or tears card can look like a hardware fault. Most of the time it is a setting in Silhouette Studio or a blade problem. This page covers the Cameo 3, 4 and 5. It goes through the causes in the order that saves the most time, from the Send panel to the blade, the mat and the rollers, and ends with when to contact Silhouette support.

## Find your symptom

| What happens | Most likely cause | Check first |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Machine moves but nothing is cut | No cut lines set, or the blade is not engaged | Send panel line settings |
| Some shapes cut, others do not | Those shapes have no cut style or are on another tool | Send panel, select each shape |
| Cuts but does not go through | Depth too low, dull or dirty blade | Blade tip and depth |
| Cuts through the backing | Depth or force too high, wrong material | Material setting |
| Tears or drags paper | Dull blade, speed too high, weak mat | Blade and mat grip |
| Cut is offset or skewed | Material shifted, rollers not gripping | Mat and roller positions |

Cameo cutting problems and likely causes

## Check the Send panel first

In Silhouette Studio, open the **Send** panel. Every shape needs a cut action assigned. In the Simple view, check that the action is Cut, not No Cut or Sketch. In the Line view, every line color in your design must have the cut box ticked. Designs imported from other programs often arrive with lines set to No Cut, and filled shapes with no outline may need the Fill or Line settings changed.

On the Cameo 4 and 5, the Send panel also lets you assign each part to **Tool 1** or **Tool 2**. If shapes are assigned to the second carriage and nothing is in it, the machine goes through the motions and cuts nothing. Check that the tool in the panel matches the blade actually installed.

## Check the blade and the depth

The Cameo 4 and 5 use an **AutoBlade** that sets its own depth from the value in Silhouette Studio, so the depth you see in the Send panel is what it uses. The older Cameo 3 AutoBlade also adjusted itself, while manual ratchet blades have to be set by hand to the number Studio shows. If the blade is worn, no setting will fix it: replace it. On the Cameo 4 and later, Kraft blades fit only the second tool carriage.

For thin vinyl, lower depth numbers work best; for cardstock and glitter, higher. The [cut settings finder](https://bladeandmat.com/tools/cut-settings-finder) gives a starting point for the Cameo, and [Silhouette Cameo cut settings](https://bladeandmat.com/blog/silhouette-cameo-cut-settings) has more detail by material.

1. Unlock the blade and lift it out of the carriage.
2. Look at the tip. Remove any vinyl, paper fibers or adhesive stuck around it.
3. Check that the blade is pushed fully into the carriage and locked.
4. In the Send panel, confirm the material and the depth or blade setting it uses.
5. Run a test cut from the Send panel on a corner of the material.
6. If the test does not cut through, raise depth or force one step and test again.

## Check the mat, rollers and material

If the material moves during the cut, lines end up offset or the blade drags and tears. Use the right mat: LightHold for paper, StandardHold for vinyl and card, StrongHold for thick materials. A mat that has lost its tack lets material slide. Clean it or replace it.

Check the rollers. On the Cameo, the pinch rollers must sit on the mat or material, inside the marked range for its width. Choose the correct mat or matless option in Studio so the machine knows what it is feeding. When cutting without a mat, the material must have a liner, and only lined vinyl and iron-on should be fed matless. If the rollers themselves slip or do not grip, see [Silhouette Cameo roller problems](https://bladeandmat.com/blog/silhouette-cameo-roller-problems).

## Software, firmware and connection

Update Silhouette Studio to the latest version and let it install any firmware update for the machine with the cutter on and connected. Older software versions can send wrong settings to newer machines. If the cutter loses connection mid job, it stops cutting; try a USB cable and port before Bluetooth. See [Silhouette Cameo not connecting](https://bladeandmat.com/blog/silhouette-cameo-not-connecting).

If none of this helps, note the machine model, the Studio version, the material and what the test cut does, and contact Silhouette America support. ## Habits that prevent failed cuts

- Run the Send panel test cut on every new roll or brand.
- Clean the blade tip after cutting glitter, flocked or adhesive-heavy materials.
- Keep separate mats for paper and vinyl.
- Change one setting at a time and note what worked.
- Keep Studio and the machine firmware up to date.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my Silhouette Cameo move but not cut?** Usually no cut lines are set in the Send panel, the shapes are assigned to an empty tool carriage, or the blade is not locked in. Check the Send panel first.

**Why won't my Cameo 4 cut through vinyl?** Check the blade tip for stuck vinyl, confirm the AutoBlade is seated and locked, and pick the correct vinyl material in Studio. Then raise depth or force one step and run a test cut.

**Why is my Cameo 3 not cutting correctly?** Older blades wear out and the Cameo 3 uses an older AutoBlade. Replace the blade if it is worn, update Studio and firmware, and check the roller positions.

**Can a dirty mat cause cut problems?** Yes. If the mat cannot hold the material, it shifts and the cut looks offset or torn. Clean or replace it.
