**Short answer:** Activate the Mug Press once through Design Space with the USB cable, then plug it in and turn it on. Wait for the light to show it is ready, wrap a compatible sublimation mug with an Infusible Ink or sublimation design, place it in the press and close the lever. The press sets its own temperature and time and beeps when done. Lift the mug out by the handle and let it cool before removing the transfer.

The Cricut Mug Press makes full-wrap mugs with Infusible Ink or sublimation transfers. Unlike a heat press for shirts, it has no temperature or time to set: it applies one fixed heat profile for compatible mugs. That makes it easy, but it also means the mug, the transfer and how tightly you wrap it decide the result. This page is for new owners and anyone getting faded, blurry or uneven mugs. It covers activation, choosing a mug, preparing the design, pressing, cooling and fixing common problems.

## Activate the Mug Press first

The Mug Press must be activated before its first use. Cricut includes a USB cable for this. You connect the press to a computer, sign in to your Cricut account in Design Space or at Cricut's setup page, and follow the prompts. Activation also checks for firmware updates. You only need to do this once; after that the press works on its own from the wall outlet.

Use a computer for activation, keep the press connected until setup confirms it is finished, then unplug the USB cable. If activation fails, update Design Space and try a different USB port.

## Choose a compatible mug

Infusible Ink and sublimation only work on polyester-coated blanks. A plain ceramic mug from the kitchen cupboard will not take the ink; the image washes off or never transfers. Use Cricut mug blanks or mugs sold as sublimation compatible.

Cricut lists the Mug Press for straight-walled mugs from 11 to 16 oz with a diameter of about 3.2 to 3.4 in (82 to 86 mm). Tapered, flared or very tall mugs will not seat evenly against the heating element, which leaves pale or blurry patches. Cricut's own blanks are the safest choice; Cricut notes that other sublimation mugs are likely to work but cannot guarantee them.

| Check | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Sublimation or Infusible Ink compatible coating | Uncoated ceramic will not take the ink |
| Straight walls, no taper | The heater must touch the mug evenly |
| Size within Cricut's listed range | Mugs outside it may not close or heat evenly |
| Clean, dry, lint-free surface | Dust and oils cause spots in the print |

Mug checklist

## Prepare the design

Wrapping tightly is the most important step. Any gap between the transfer and the mug lets the ink gas spread, which shows up as a blurry or ghosted image. Run a finger firmly over the whole design before pressing.

1. In Design Space, choose the mug template for your mug size so the design fits the printable area.
2. Cut Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet mirrored, ink side up on a StandardGrip mat, or print a sublimation design mirrored on sublimation paper.
3. Weed the Infusible Ink sheet by cracking and peeling the waste; do not use a hook that can scratch the ink.
4. Clean the mug with a lint-free cloth and a little rubbing alcohol, and let it dry.
5. Wrap the design tightly around the mug, ink side against the surface, and tape it with heat-resistant tape so nothing can shift.
6. Keep the design clear of the handle and the very top and bottom edges of the mug.

## Press the mug

Place the press on a heat-resistant, stable surface with space around it and plug it in. Press the power button. The press heats up and its light changes when it is ready; wait for the ready signal before loading a mug. Open the lever, set the mug in with the handle sticking out through the opening, and close the lever firmly.

The press starts automatically when the lever is closed and runs its fixed cycle. Do not open the lever during the cycle. When it beeps to signal the end, open the lever. If the light shows an error, such as a blinking orange, see [Cricut Mug Press blinking orange](https://bladeandmat.com/blog/cricut-mug-press-blinking-orange).

Note: The mug and the press are very hot after pressing. Lift the mug only by the handle, set it on a heat-resistant surface, and keep children and pets away. Never touch the heating area.

## Cool the mug and remove the transfer

Set the mug down on a heat-resistant surface and let it cool before handling the body. Once it is cool enough to touch, peel off the tape and the transfer sheet or paper. Removing the transfer too early can smear the ink, and the hot coating can be damaged by fingernails.

You can press another mug as soon as the press shows it is ready again. Turn the press off and unplug it when you are done. The Mug Press has an auto-off feature after a period of inactivity, but switching it off yourself is a good habit.

| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pale or faded colors | Mug not sublimation compatible, or old ink | Use a coated blank and fresh transfer |
| Blurry or ghosted edges | Transfer not wrapped tightly | Wrap tighter and tape all edges |
| Light patches on one side | Tapered or wrong-size mug | Use a straight mug in the listed range |
| Spots or specks | Dust or lint on mug or transfer | Clean the mug and lint-free handling |
| Design runs into handle area | Wrong template size | Use the template for your mug size |

## Frequently asked questions

**How long does the Cricut Mug Press take to heat up?** It heats on its own after you turn it on. Wait for the light to show it is ready rather than timing it, then load the mug.

**Can I use regular vinyl in the Mug Press?** No. The Mug Press is made for Infusible Ink and sublimation on coated mugs. Adhesive vinyl is applied by hand, not with heat.

**Can I set the temperature on the Mug Press?** No. It uses one fixed setting for compatible mugs, which is why mug choice matters.

**Why did my design come out blurry?** The transfer was not tight against the mug. Wrap it firmly and tape every edge before pressing.
