**Short answer:** No. Cricut Design Space is free and runs every Cricut cutting machine without a subscription. You can upload your own SVG, PNG and JPG files, type with fonts installed on your computer and cut them. Cricut Access is an optional subscription that unlocks Cricut's large library of images, fonts and projects plus member discounts, so it pays off only if you use that library often.

A new Cricut owner opens Design Space and sees a lot of images and fonts marked with a green A or a price. That makes it look as if the machine needs a subscription to work. It does not. This page is for Cricut Joy, Explore and Maker owners deciding whether to pay for Cricut Access. It covers what works for free, what the Standard and Premium plans add, how to cut your own designs without paying anything, and a simple way to decide whether the subscription is worth it for how you craft.

## What Cricut Access is

Cricut Access is Cricut's paid membership for Design Space. Cricut describes two plans: **Standard**, sold monthly or annually, and **Premium**, sold annually only. Both unlock a large library of Cricut images, fonts and ready-made projects, a discount on cricut.com purchases, and some subscriber-only Design Space features. Premium adds a bigger discount on materials and free economy shipping over an order minimum.

Plan prices and exact benefits change, and Cricut runs promotions often. We could not confirm a current official price list for October 2026, so check the Cricut Access page on cricut.com for today's prices before you subscribe. Cricut has offered a free trial of Access when you register a new machine, which is a good way to see how much of the library you actually use.

## What works in Design Space without a subscription

Design Space itself is free to download and use on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Without Access you can still do everything needed to make projects with your own designs.

- Set up and update the machine, and run every cut, draw, score and print then cut job
- Upload your own SVG, DXF, PNG, JPG and other image files and cut them
- Use fonts installed on your computer or phone (system fonts)
- Use the free images, fonts and projects Cricut marks as free
- Buy single images or fonts one at a time if you need just one
- Use the basic tools: shapes, text, weld, slice, attach, offset and contour

Note: Features shift between free and paid from time to time. If a tool shows a lock or a green A badge, it is a subscriber feature in the current version.

## What Cricut Access adds

The library is the main value. If you make a lot of seasonal decals, cards and shirts from Cricut's images and like starting from a finished project, the subscription saves time. If you design your own files, buy SVG bundles elsewhere or only make a few projects a month, the free version covers you.

| Feature | Free | With Access |
| --- | --- | --- |

## How to use your own SVG files for free

PNG and JPG files work too: Design Space asks you to remove the background and then cuts around the outline. For text, type with a system font so you are not using a paid font by accident. Fonts and images you uploaded yourself never need Access. The [cut settings finder](https://bladeandmat.com/tools/cut-settings-finder) gives the blade and mat for the material you choose.

1. Download or create the SVG and unzip it if it came in a zip folder.
2. In Design Space, start a new project and click Upload, then Upload Image.
3. Choose the SVG file. Design Space shows it as a cut image; name it and save.
4. Select it in the upload list and add it to the canvas.
5. Ungroup if you want to change layer colors, then size it to fit your material.
6. Click Make, choose the material, and cut as usual.

## Cricut Joy without a subscription

Cricut Joy, Joy Xtra and the newer Joy models run the same Design Space app as the Explore and Maker, so the same rules apply: no subscription needed. On a phone, the app may offer a simpler Cricut Joy mode. You can still upload images there. Smart Materials and Joy mats work exactly the same with or without Access.

## How to decide if Access is worth it

Try this simple test. During the free trial, keep a note of every Access image, font or project you actually cut. If at the end of the month the list is short, or you could have bought those few items singly, skip the subscription. If you used many library items and bought supplies from cricut.com at the same time, the discount and library may cover the cost.

Sellers should also read Cricut's license terms for library images. Many Cricut images carry limits on commercial use. If you sell shirts or decals, designs you made yourself or bought with a commercial license avoid that question. ## Frequently asked questions

**Do you need Cricut Access with a Cricut Maker?** No. A Maker, Explore or Joy works fully with free Design Space. Access only adds library content, some extra tools and discounts.

**What happens to my projects if I cancel Cricut Access?** Your projects stay in your account, but images and fonts from the Access library will ask you to subscribe or buy them before you can cut them again. Your own uploads and system fonts keep working.

**Is Cricut Access a one-time purchase?** No, it is a subscription. Cricut lists a Standard plan billed monthly or annually and a Premium plan billed annually. Check cricut.com for the current price.

**Can I use free SVG files from other websites?** Yes. Upload them in Design Space and cut them without Access. Check the file's license if you plan to sell what you make.
